When you're sourcing tableware that touches food, certifications aren't just badges on a website — they're proof. They tell you a product has been independently audited for safety, quality and responsible sourcing. Here's a plain-English guide to the standards that matter, and what each one actually verifies.

FSC — responsible forestry

The Forest Stewardship Council certifies that paper and wood come from responsibly managed forests — replanted, protected and harvested without destroying ecosystems. For paper cutlery, FSC is your assurance that the raw material is genuinely renewable.

BRCGS — global food safety

BRCGS (Brand Reputation Compliance Global Standards) is one of the most widely recognised food-safety management standards in the world. Certification means a manufacturer's processes — hygiene, traceability, risk control — meet rigorous, regularly audited benchmarks.

ISO — quality management

ISO standards (such as ISO 9001) certify that a company runs a consistent, well-documented quality-management system. In practice, it means what you order is what you get, batch after batch.

SEDEX — ethical trade

SEDEX membership signals a commitment to ethical and responsible supply chains — fair labour practices, safe working conditions and business integrity. Increasingly, buyers expect it as standard.

FDA — food-safe (USA)

Compliance with U.S. Food & Drug Administration requirements confirms that materials are safe for direct food contact under American regulations — important for anyone exporting to or sourcing from the US market.

LFGB — food-safe (EU)

LFGB is Germany's food-and-commodities act, often considered stricter than FDA, and a respected benchmark across Europe. LFGB compliance means a product has passed demanding tests for safe food contact.

One certification tells you something. Six, covering sourcing, safety, quality and ethics, tell you a supplier takes the whole picture seriously.

What to ask your supplier

  • Which certifications do you actually hold, and can you share the certificates?
  • Are your products certified for the markets I sell into (US, EU, etc.)?
  • Is your raw material responsibly sourced (e.g. FSC)?
  • Are your products free from BPA, PFAS and fluorine chemistry?

At Polygon Papertech, our paper cutlery is backed by FSC, BRCGS, ISO, SEDEX, FDA and LFGB — so safety, quality and sustainability all come standard.
